The current intention supposes construction of the largest onshore farm in Europe with a total installed capacity of 600 MW. The first of a total of 240 wind turbines was commissioned in the project of the largest European wind farm Fantanele – Cogealac (1st June 2010 at 5:25 pm. of the local time). More than a hundred of turbines in the first phase of the project have fully been completed by now and the work continues every day to connect them to the grid. In parallel with the ongoing construction work, these turbines are undergoing a series of tests to be stepwise connected to the grid.
The first stage of the project until 2009, evisages 139 GE 2.5xl devices with a total installed capacity of 347.5 MW. That is a 100 m high wind power plant with a rotor which has 99 m in diameter. The second stage with a total installed capacity of 252.5 MW shall be completed by the end of 2010.
CEZ Group has gained the complete construction project of two neighbouring wind power farms Fontanele and Cogealac in the Romanian province Dobrogea from Continental Wind Partners LLC. The installed capacity of the project exceeds twice the output of the second largest European wind farm under construction, and reaches a triple installed output of the present largest wind farm in operation in Europe (Guadalajara, Spain). The investment of CEZ Group in this project will amount to 1.1bn EUR (ca 27bn CZK).
The project is located with maximum view to the environment, wind conditions in the locality are excellent. The project of the wind farm will bring nearly 10% share in the Romanian renewable energy resources market (including large hydro power plants). It is the first important wind farm project in Romania, as the installed capacity of wind power plants in the country was only 10 MW at the end of 2008.
