Temelín back to full power

The outage of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant lasted only twenty hours. The technicians preventively replaced two sensors during it that measure the shift between the high and low pressure turbines rotor in the non-nuclear section of the plant. Since this morning, Temelín operates again at full power.

By the replacement of the sensors, the technicians avoided an unplanned shutdown of Temelín unit. This might have come in an inconvenient time and, moreover, the replacement would have lasted longer. "It was a preventive measure. We could have operated the unit with a single sensor, however, in the moment of its failure, we would have had to shutdown it immediately and we wanted to avoid it," says Marek Sviták, the Spokesperson for the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant.

The power engineers have planned the outage for the weekend when the electricity consumption is lower than on weekdays. Operating staff has disconnected the turbine generator from the transmission system on Sunday at 4:30 am. The unit restored the electricity production today at 0:28 am and full reached the full power at 2:30 am.

Since the beginning of the year, Temelín has produced 500 thousand MWh of electricity. Currently, it is the largest source of electricity generation in Czech Republic. It covers one fifth of the Czech consumption by its safe and emission-free production. In 2015, it produced 14.23 million of MWh of electric energy.Southern Bohemia would put up with the electricity from Temelín for almost 4.5 years and, for the Czech households, it would be sufficient for all year round.
