The Mělník I Power Plant was built and commissioned in 1957-1960 as a condensing power plant for the ČEZ power system. There are currently 6 boilers in operation, each with an output of 230 t/h of steam. The steam from all boilers is connect to the common steam collector and drive 4 steam turbines with total capacity of 4x60 MWe.
The power plant presently supplies heat even to the most distant parts of Prague, such as Jižní Město, Krč, and Modřany. In 2003, the power plant was also connected to the heating system of Neratovice.
