CEZ is taking interest in construction of hydro power plant in Macedonia

A tender for a construction licence for a dam and Boshkov Most 68 MW hydro power plant has been announced by the Ministry of Economy of Macedonia. Boshkov Most hydro power plant is to be built in the west of Macedonia near the city of Debar and on the river Mala Reka. The dam will be a part of the cascade with two lower situated plants, Radika and Spilje.

CEZ Power Company has today officially expressed its interest in this project. This so called BOT transaction (build - operate - transfer) represents dam and power plant construction, their operation for a certain period, which will be specified in the second round of the tender, and then back transfer of the plant. The amount of the investment will be contained in each applicant´s bid.

There are 2 million inhabitants in Macedonia. In 2006, the consumption was 8.4 TWh (6.5 TWh of which was the own production, imports represented 1.9 TWh), while the yearly net electricity production was 6.5 TWh. So Macedonia is a net importer of electricity. Primarily in summer months, there is an obvious lack of electrical energy, which needs to be solved through supplies from abroad. In view of an anticipated increase in demand for electricity, analysts estimate that the deficit situation will very probably continue in the future as well.
