Yesterday, the TG3 unit at the Slapy Hydroelectric Power Plant resumed power supply to the grid, meaning this key component of the Vltava River cascade is once again operating at full capacity. The reason for the nearly year-long outage of one third of the plant’s capacity was the replacement of a 45-tonne safety quick-closing valve. The original valve had been in operation at Slapy since the plant was commissioned in 1955, and in recent weeks engineers had to assemble its replacement from three separate parts. In recent years, the Slapy Power Plant has undergone comprehensive modernisation of all three 48 MW units. Since entering regular operation, it has produced over 20 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to the entire electricity consumption of the Czech Republic for four months.
