ČEZ: PV plants increased production by more than 30% last year. Growth driven by new power plants and a sunny year

The sun’s share in the production of emission-free electricity in the Czech Republic is increasing. This is confirmed by the figures for generation by photovoltaic power plants operated by ČEZ Group companies, which delivered more than 185 GWh to the grid in eight regions of the country. The 30.4 per cent increase is due to newly commissioned power plants and more sunshine than a year earlier. ČEZ wants to commission hundreds of MW in new PV plants in the coming years. ČEZ is installing additional power plants for households and customers from the public and corporate sectors.

  • Emission-free solar power plants generated more than 185 GWh of electricity last year.
  • Newly commissioned power plants and favourable weather are behind the positive trend.
  • Czechs prefer nuclear and renewable energy sources when it comes to their energy future.

According to a recent survey by the IPSOS agency, the most popular energy sources in the Czech Republic are nuclear power plants and renewables. ČEZ Group also focuses on both types of these emission-free sources. Photovoltaic power plants operated by ČEZ, ČEZ Obnovitelné zdroje and Energotrans produced more than 185 GWh of emission-free electricity last year, compared to 142 GWh a year earlier. This amount of energy could cover the consumption of more than 50,000 Czech households over the same period. In terms of production, the three strongest months – August, June and May – accounted for 38 percent of PV generation.

ČEZ Group has recently launched PV plants with an output of tens of MWp and the total output of PV plants operated has reached the 200 MWp mark.

“We recently commissioned new photovoltaic power plants with a capacity of tens of MW and their production is already affecting the overall statistics for solar electricity generation. It grew by more than 30 percent year on year and we expect further growth in the order of tens of per cent in the coming years. In addition to the power plants already in operation, for example in Dolní Podluží and Dolní Litvínov, we are building large parks with an output of tens of MW, which we will launch in the next two years at industrial sites and brownfields around Tušimice, Prunéřov and Ledvice. Some will work in combination with battery systems and therefore help stabilise the energy system,“ said member of the ČEZ Board of Directors and Chief of the Renewable and Traditional Energy Division Jan Kalina.

"We are gradually taking over the newly completed power plants, but we do not want to rely only on them or the weather. We are focusing on the overall facilities and service provided to our power plants. The renewable energy dispatching centre in Málkov near Chomutov, which came into operation last year, is contributing significantly to better control and management. We also see great potential in gradually increasing the standard of maintenance thanks to the introduction of new technologies such as imaging and detection of panel condition using drones,” said Chief of Renewable Resources at ČEZ Petr Zelenka.
