ČEZ has already brought ships with the Czech Republic’s annual consumption to the LNG terminal in Eemshaven
The equivalent of the Czech Republic’s annual gas consumption has already been brought by ships to the LNG terminal in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, which has been operational since September 2022. LNG terminals in Europe and the building of new supply chains have been instrumental in overcoming the energy crisis and rapidly reducing energy prices in Europe. From the beginning of its operation until the end of 2025, the LNG terminal in Eemshaven has received a total of 72 ships with gas destined for the Czech Republic, bringing 6.44 billion cubic metres of gas. None of the ships contained Russian gas, which is a condition for terminal users.

Eemshaven was the first ever LNG terminal to come online in Europe after the start of the war in Ukraine. The facility allows the processing of up to eight billion cubic metres of gas per year, of which up to three billion are destined for the Czech Republic, a volume equivalent to almost half of current Czech consumption. In addition to ČEZ, the terminal is also used by the multinational companies Shell and Engie.
From the start of operations in September 2022 until the end of 2025, the terminal received a total of 72 ships carrying gas for the Czech Republic. The ships transported a total of 6.44 billion cubic metres of gas to the Netherlands, equivalent to 73.1 GWh of gas, or 99.1% of the Czech Republic’s annual gas consumption of 73.8 GWh in 2024.
“The Dutch terminal has been instrumental in ending the use of Russian gas in the Czech Republic and overcoming the energy crisis. Since the beginning of the terminal's operation, we have secured the equivalent of the Czech Republic’s entire annual gas consumption through the terminal. The construction of LNG terminals in Europe and the building of new supply chains outside Russia have helped the whole of Europe to cope with the energy crisis. Thanks to gas supplies from the United States and other countries, sufficient quantities of the commodity have been available to customers, which has been positively reflected in end prices for Czech customers as well,” said Daniel Beneš, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of ČEZ.
ČEZ arranged a voyage by an LNG tanker across the Atlantic for the first time last year
In 2025 alone, 28 ships carrying gas destined for the Czech Republic arrived at the terminal, transporting 2.48 billion cubic metres of gas, the equivalent of more than one-third of the Czech Republic’s annual gas consumption. Last year, for the first time ever, ČEZ brought a ship to the terminal and took care of its entire voyage itself. Until then, the energy company had always ordered LNG as a complete service and only took delivery of the cargo at the Eemshaven terminal. Last year, ČEZ experts tried out the entire navigation and logistics chain, i.e. negotiating with the liquefaction terminal in the United States, chartering the ship, loading in the USA and the actual journey across the Atlantic and return of the ship. By mastering another part of the LNG handling process, ČEZ has strengthened its know-how in commodity trading and thus the energy security of the Czech Republic.
The terminal, which has a total annual capacity of 8 billion cubic metres, of which ČEZ has contracted 3 billion, is located in the port of Eemshaven in the Dutch province of Groningen. It consists of two vessels, Energos Igloo and Eemshaven LNG, enabling LNG gasification. Liquefied natural gas is delivered to the terminal in specially modified tankers. After being heated and converted into a gaseous state at the terminal, it is injected into the transport pipeline system.
